Millbourne Borough Council Vice President MD Nurul Hasan is accused of falsifying nearly three dozen voter registrations and illegally casting ballots in a desperate bid to secure a 2021 mayoral victory, Delaware County District Attorney Jack Stollsteimer announced on Wednesday, March 5.
Hasan, who ultimately lost by nearly 30 votes, allegedly exploited Pennsylvania’s online voter registration system to change non-residents' addresses, obtain mail-in ballots, and submit votes for himself, authorities said.
“The bedrock principle of democracy is free and fair elections. Millbourne Borough Councilman MD Hasan violated that principle in 2021 by stuffing the ballot box with illegal votes in an effort to win higher office,” Stollsteimer said.
Fraudulent Votes, Stolen Identities, And A Failed Power Grab
Hasan and his allies persuaded non-Millbourne residents to hand over their driver’s licenses or Social Security numbers—while some had their personal information stolen outright, according to the criminal complaint. Using that data, Hasan allegedly re-registered them as Millbourne voters without their knowledge.
Investigators say the disgraced politician then directed mail-in ballots to himself and a small group of co-conspirators, filled them out, and submitted fraudulent votes—all in a last-ditch effort to seize power.
Despite the fraud, Hasan was still defeated by Mayor Mahabubul A. Tayub.
FBI, Feds, And DA Team Up To Take Him Down
Hasan now faces both state and federal charges for his role in the scheme, prosecutors said.
“This case proves that election fraud does happen, but it also proves that we will catch you,” Delaware County Elections Director Jim Allen said.
Hasan is charged with:
- 16 counts of Unlawful Voting
- 16 counts of Voting Fraud
- 16 counts of Obstructing Administration of Law or Other Governmental Function
All charges are misdemeanors.
The FBI, U.S. Attorney’s Office, and Delaware County Bureau of Elections assisted in the joint investigation.
Authorities urge anyone who suspects voter fraud or election tampering to report it immediately by calling 911.
